A couple of key requirements for a pub/sub system are efficiency and scalability. We observe
that the ability to exploit multicast delivery is key to achieving efficiency, and to avoid wasting server and network resources. Scalability requirements come in multiple forms: the ability to accommodate a large number of publishers; the ability to accommodate a large number of subscribers; enable a nearly unlimited amount of information being generated by publishers; allow for delivery of information related to subscriptions independent of the frequency at which that information is generated by publishers; allow for subscribers to not have to be connected to the network at all times, so that information production and reception by consumers can be asynchronous. |
