The importance of the MTL as a memory system is attributable to its connectivity with the broader neocortex. Multiple uni- and polymodal cortical regions project to the parahippocampal and perirhinal cortices (Burwell & Amaral, 1998; Schmahmann & Pandya, 2006; Suzuki & Amaral, 1994a). These cortical projections encompass two parallel pathways. The parahippocampal cortex receives inputs from visual association areas, retrosplenial cortex, the dorsal bank of the superior temporal sulcus, and the parietal lobe, among other regions. | The centrality of the MTL memory system extends to its connectivity with the broader neocortex.
