DeNew and Zimmermann (1994) found that a 1% increase in the employment of guest workers reduces the hourly wage of local workers by 0.45%, while salaries of employees increased by 0.12%. They also noted a 0.16% drop in the wages of local workers as a result of a 1% increase in the employment share of guest workers. In addition, Haisken-DeNew and Zimmermann (1995), in the context of the disaggregation of low-skilled workers, were able to show that such workers with over 20 years of labour market experience are less affected by the effects of immigration. This is due to the fact that they are more difficult to substitute by immigrants.

DeNew, J. P./Zimmermann, K. F.
