DeNew and Zimmermann (1994) found that a 1% increase in the employment of guest workers reduces the hourly wage of local workers by 0.45%, while salaries of employees increased by 0.12%. They also noted a 0.16% drop in the wages of local workers as a result of a 1% increase in the employment share of guest workers. In addition, Haisken-DeNew and Zimmermann (1995), in the context of the disaggregation of low-skilled workers, were able to show that such workers with over 20 years of labour market experience are less affected by the effects of immigration. This is due to the fact that they are more difficult to substitute by immigrants.

A further analysis carried out by Pischke and Velling (1997) with the help of the income function and an analysis of changes in wage levels and the proportion of foreigners in relation to the total population came to the conclusion that immigration had a positive wage effect. Hatzius (1994) also found, on the basis of a similar model, that foreign guest workers had a considerable negative effect on the wages of the natives, while the immigration of ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe had no effect on the local wages. Particularly in the context of the eastern enlargement of the European Union, Sinn and Werding (2001) assumed particularly strong pressure on wages and the employment of low-skilled workers in the processing industry as well as in the construction sector.
